History of La Grange Railroad Museum and Education Center
The museum is housed in the original L&N Train Depot, a historical landmark constructed in 1914. The main level showcases a variety of railroad artifacts and displays, including a dedicated room for the electric trolley interurban system that operated between La Grange and Louisville from 1907 to 1935. The lower level is a model railroad area featuring a diverse range of functioning model train layouts. The most extensive layout boasts over 800 feet of HO-scale track! For our young visitors, there's a play area for a hands-on experience. We also have a project room and an educational area, inviting model railroad builders of all skill levels to collaborate and learn.
If the museum is not open, you can still view the landscaped education area with outdoor kiosks, a 1929 American Car & Foundry dining car, a caboose, Ernie the shunter, and the Flying Duchess, one of the few British locomotives located in the U.S...used as the model for Thomas the Train.
