La Grange Railroad Museum and Education Center

La Grange is a charming historic downtown situated just 25 minutes from downtown Louisville on I-71. It offers a unique sight for first-time visitors, with freight trains passing right through the center of Main Street. The bells and vibrations fill the air, and both locals and tourists can experience up to 20 trains per day. La Grange is a notable train town in Kentucky and has been featured in photography exhibits, blogs, and movies.

If you're a history enthusiast or a train lover, you'll definitely want to visit the La Grange Railroad Museum & Education Center. Located just past Main Street Bourbon & Ale House and the observation tower, this museum features outdoor rolling stock, including a steam engine, a dining car, and a caboose. Visitors can even rent the dining car for private functions. The museum showcases railroad artifacts and displays and has model train layouts spanning over 800 feet of HO-scale track.

For this attraction, you can collect the passport stickers at our Oldham County Tourism office located at:
6826 W State Hwy 22, Crestwood, KY 40014

History of La Grange Railroad Museum and Education Center

The museum is housed in the original L&N Train Depot, a historical landmark constructed in 1914. The main level showcases a variety of railroad artifacts and displays, including a dedicated room for the electric trolley interurban system that operated between La Grange and Louisville from 1907 to 1935. The lower level is a model railroad area featuring a diverse range of functioning model train layouts. The most extensive layout boasts over 800 feet of HO-scale track! For our young visitors, there's a play area for a hands-on experience. We also have a project room and an educational area, inviting model railroad builders of all skill levels to collaborate and learn.

If the museum is not open, you can still view the landscaped education area with outdoor kiosks, a 1929 American Car & Foundry dining car, a caboose, Ernie the shunter, and the Flying Duchess, one of the few British locomotives located in the U.S...used as the model for Thomas the Train.
